Moments ago, the House of Representatives passed an immigration bill protecting millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation and offering them a pathway to citizenship in the U.S.
Per Axios:
- Under this bill
, the Homeland Security Department and the Justice Department would provide permanent resident status to people who meet specific qualifications. - It would provide a path to citizenship to immigrants who arrived in the U.S. before Jan. 1, 2021, were under the age of 18 at the time, and meet other criteria.
- The bill would also offer a pathway to citizenship to immigrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a designation given to those who come from countries in crisis.
The 228-197, vote was mostly party-based, with nine Republicans joining all the Democrats in support.
Biden’s Office of Management and Budget said in a statement of support Thursday. “Americans recognize that our nation is enriched by the contributions of immigrants.”
They added that the legislation is a “critical milestone toward much-needed relief for the millions of undocumented individuals who call the United States home.”
“When you have a crisis at the border, the last thing you should do is make it worse,” said GOP Whip Steve Scalie, R-La., who whipped members to vote “no.” “That’s what this bill does.”
NEW: House votes 228-197 to pass the Dream and Promise Act, which provides a path to citizenship for some undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as minors.
